Scola, Rudez Pick Up World Cup Wins
Two Pacers saw action on the first day of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Luis Scola of Argentina, and Damjan Rudez of Croatia, both helped their respective teams to first-game victories.
For Scola, it was international basketball as usual. He imposed his will on both sides of the ball against an outmatched Puerto Rico. Scola racked up 20 points while going 7-of-10 from the field and hauled in nine rebounds as well. Riding the scoring of Scola, Argentina cruised to a comfortable 98-75 win.
For Rudez and Croatia, however, their win was anything but comfortable. In a game against the Phillipines, Rudez & Co. needed overtime to defeat their opponent by a score of 81-78. Rudez was uncharacteristically cold from the field on the evening, going 0-for-4 from beyond the 3-point line. However, his two made free throws with 6 seconds left in overtime made it a two possession game, all but sealing the victory for Croatia.
On Sunday, both players will be back in action. Rudez and Scola will go head-to-head tomorrow at 7:30 A.M. EST when Croatia (1-0) plays Argentina (1-0).
